Souq of Omdurman, Sudan

One of Sudan’s oldest and most popular market places is located to on the northern side of the Nile in Omdruman. It was our first stop of our 2 week tour of the northern Sudan in Jan/Feb 2022.

The market caters to every need. Fabric for making clothing or curtains, bowls to eat and drink from and souvenirs for visitors like myself to bring home. It’s Khartoum’s culural center. Residents come here to catch up with one another over a cup or two of chai as they people watch. Market vendors are friendly and professional. There’s no pressure to buy anything, and many are interested and exchanging simply pleasentries. “Hello” and “where you come from” are the most popular. Thinking back now, I wish I had made room for more souvenirs in my backpack.

Honeycomb tombs of Kerma

Honeycomb structures which are about 3-4 meters tall could be seen close to the highway on the side of the Nile in Northern Sudan. The vehicle takes a left on a dirt road that leads to the field of 20 desert tombs close to the city of Old Dongola. This area is a 17th century Sufi graveyard is located in the pre-islamic city of Kerma. The desert field of tombs and gravesites lies to the east of the archaeological site of .
